Jane is intensely proud of her cats and has been a long-time contributor of their pictures to this site. She says about this photo of Alice, "..What better day of the week than Wednesday to be Wordless? The middle of the week to get you through the rest of the days to come. A quiet and peaceful day to think about... 'what next'? And what better friend to do it with... but 'Alice'."

Yesterday, Tim Callahan, CEO of Wellpet LLC, manufacturer of Wellness Pet Food, announced the recall of certain lot numbers of Wellness Canned Foods for Cats. The stated reason for the recall was "While recent laboratory testing found that most lots of Wellness canned cat food that were tested contain sufficient amounts of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), some of the lots listed below might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine. However, out of an abundance of caution, WellPet has decided to recall all of the lots listed below:"

  • Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13
  • Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with 10NOV13 or 17NOV13 best buy dates
It should be noted that during the testing, "WellPet discovered the lower thiamine levels during independent testing conducted together with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in response to a single, isolated consumer complaint received by the FDA."

Thanks to Barry M. for passing this wonderful video along: This is Charlie. Charlie has poor motor skills, and walks with an exaggerated gait, because he has a neurological condition called cerebeller hypoplasia (CH). His condition does not make him any less lovable, in fact, as this video states, a CH cat may be the best cat you've ever had. One of my first cats was a CH kitty, although I had no idea of that diagnosis at the time. "Spooky" bobbed her little head uncontrollably, a result of panleukopenia as a kitten. If anything, my husband and I loved her more rather than less. God must love CH cats, as they have been given the sweetest personalities as if in compensation for their physical disabilities. Several of my readers also have CH cats, as told in their Special Needs Cats Show and Tell stories, and can attest to the "lovability quotient" of these cats. :

  • Thumper and Lucy
  • Mini Dee
  • Julie
  • ...

Although ranking among the various cat breed popularity varies from year-to-year, most of the same breeds appear year after year in the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) list of the 10 most popular cat breeds. I am adding one more breed, which has shown popularity on my site. Also, although technically, it is not a breed, I've also added another type of cat to this list, as more households include these cats than any recognized breed. The list is shown in reverse order. Pictured here is an Abyssinian cat, which is among those breeds on the list...

Dateline Friday, 2-25-2011:Utah H.B. 210, ironically named "Animal Cruelty Amendments" was passed Friday with a 44/28 majority of votes. The final amendment added was to make the bill applicable only in areas where hunting is allowed, which helped qualm concerns that owned cats might be targeted for killing. According to the article in the Deseret News, "Before the vote, Minority Assistant Whip Brian King, D-Salt Lake, said he is concerned the bill provides a loophole for individuals who want to 'satisfy their own perverse sense' by killing animals for pleasure."

Guideposts Love Dem Cats ' Doug Snyder, one of 4 Feline Fanatics, created a lovely profile of the Big Cat Rescue, located in Tampa, FL, after visiting the sanctuary several times. Doug wrote:

Although I had visited the Big Cat Rescue three times, I never knew the unbelievable background and origin of the place. Meeting Carole Baskin, the founder and CEO, was a real pleasure. She was such a tender soul that I knew right away the cats were in great hands.

Carole and her late husband started the Big Cat Rescue out of the goodness of their hearts. It was through their discovery of the horrific practices of bobcat and lynx fur farms that they knew they had to do something.
I was amazed as Doug was, when I read the story of the founding of Big Cat Rescue. I could easily spend hours just exploring this web site, which features cats from the 16 wild species rescued (including a rare Pallas cat, and Sand cats, native to Africa and the Middle East), articles on endangered big cats, and tons of other content. Big Cat Rescue has several "matching funds" donors, and your donations are welcome to help maintain this superb sanctuary for the world's endangered cats of the wild.

Unless one has personally experienced having a terminally ill cat, it is very difficult to know what to say or do to support a friend in that position. The new "cat dad" who emailed me this question found himself in that dilemma with two separate friends: a woman whose cat was terminally ill, and a male friend whose cat had recently died.

Tabbies are so ubiquitous that many people think of them as a breed. Not so; the tabby is a color pattern - most often stripes, but sometimes stripes and whorls, or even spots and stripes. The tabby pattern is so popular that it can be found in many pedigreed cats today.
